At 10.47 A.M on April 28, 2021, a container truck with the plate BKS 77C-056.31, drived by Mr. Le Xuan Hieu (born in 1984, residing in Ha Nam), traveled in the South – North direction in the Hai Van 2 Tunnel. When arriving at Km4+061, 2.5km from the North Tunnel exit, the container truck suddenly lost control and crashed into the right handrail of the Tunnel. The accident caused the container truck to be thrown to the left road side and then slided along the Tunnel wall before completely stopping.
Getting the news from the Traffic Operations Center, Hai Van Tunnel Management & Operation Enterprise immediately dispatched rescue forces to the scene to rescue as well as regulate traffic. At the same time, the Enterprise reported to the traffic police force in Phu Loc district to coordinate for resolving. The scene of the accident was quickly cleared, hence allowing traffic to return to normal.
Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the tractor truck got out of shape, concrete tunnel wall, pedestrian corridor, and the traffic lights at the accident site were heavily damaged.
At the time of the accident, the traffic conditions were normal. Particularly, the road surface was not wet, the lights were in daytime mode, the ventilation system and signal lights and traffic VMS boards were working properly. The initial cause was considered that the axle was broken, causing loss of control. The Police Department of Phu Loc is continuing to investigate and clarify the cause of the accident.
In a quick interview at the scene, Mr. Le Xuan Hieu was still shocked: “If I went on the pass today instead of going in the Tunnel, the container truck would crash into the abyss. If so, not only the container truck would be damaged, but my life is also in danger.” Mr. Hieu said that it is very fortunate that Hai Van Tunnel now only has one-way traffic.Because if the accident happened on a two-way tunnel, the collision with another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction could occur.
The driver also said that after the accident he was promptly helped by the rescue force of the Enterprise. “Going through the Tunnel is very safe for drivers and vehicles, the service of the Tunnel is also very good,” said Mr. Le Xuan Hieu.
Hai Van 2 Tunnel connecting Da Nang city with Thua Thien Hue province has been inaugurated and put into operation since the Lunar New Year 2021. Since then, traffic pressure has decreased, the average speed of the vehicles has been increased from 45km/h to 65km/h. In particular, the average time for vehicles to go through the Tunnel has been decreased from about 15 minutes to about 6 minutes. The risks of accidents and congestions have been also minimized. |
