Applying BIM to manage the construction of the Prenn Pass Upgrading and Expansion Project

On March 21, 2023, the Vice Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee, Mr. Vo Ngoc Hiep, and DCG’s leaders (the parent company of the construction units) went to check the construction of the Prenn Pass Upgrading and Expansion Project.

DCG’s Chairman, Mr. Ho Minh Hoang, affirmed that the project is of great significance in ensuring the safety of people.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Huy – General Director of HHV, said that the contractors mobilized 80 machines and 350 employees and organized ten road construction prows, ten construction prows for retaining walls, and four bridge construction prows simultaneously on the whole route. The dismantling work reached 100%, the soil and rock excavation reached 30%, the foundation building reached 20%, etc. The other works of constructors also meet the construction requirements.

The contractor has coordinated with the thư supervision consultant and the investor to make a detailed construction plan.

In the project, the contractors’ consortium applied digital technology through LiDAR and 3D-Laser Scanning equipment, combined with Digital Twin technology and BIM for construction management.

This technology helps to collect data, calculate the exact quantity, digitize the project status, create 3D models, visualize the project status and predict the real problems that may occur, automatically find the points of conflict between the items, etc. Thus, it supports the constructors in checking the design drawings’ correctness, visually assessing the overall project after each construction phase, and giving optimal construction plans.

Mr. Le Quynh Mai – DCG’s Vice Chairman, explained the BIM application in the project management

This technology is also being applied at the Quang Ngai – Hoai Nhon and Chi Thanh – Van Phong (package XL01) projects constructed by DCG.

The contractors said that the project is facing some problems affecting the implementation progress. The contractors proposed to the investor to direct the units to speed up the handover of the site, soon approve the adjusted design, and approve the dumping site as proposed by the contractor.

After listening to the contractors’ report, Mr. Vo Ngoc Hiep highly appreciated the contractors’ construction organization and supported BIM application in the project construction management.

The Vice Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee suggested that the contractors take advantage of the sunny weather to speed up the progress and try to complete the roadbed in June.

The Prenn Pass Upgrading and Expansion Project is a Grade III mountainous transport project with a length of about 7.37 km and a total investment of 553 billion VND. Mr. Ho Minh Hoang affirmed: “The project is not large in scale compared to other projects that DCG has been implementing. However, we pay great attention to it because of its social significance, namely solving the problem of traffic congestion and accidents for people”.
