Construction starts on 2 roads connecting to Long Thanh airport in southern Vietnam

The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) on Friday broke ground on two road projects leading to the under-construction Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam.

The roads, which belong to the third component – major facilities – of the first phase of the big-ticket airport project, require a total investment of over VND2.63 trillion (US$111 million).

A consortium led by Deo Ca Group is the contractor of the project.

They expect to complete the project in 885 days.

Road No. 1, which will be 4.3 kilometers long, will run from the west of the airport to National Highway 51, connecting the airport to Ho Chi Minh City and provinces in the west of the airport.

The road will allow a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour.

It will serve the transport of machines and equipment for the construction of the upcoming items of the first phase of the Long Thanh International Airport project.

Meanwhile, the 3.5-kilometer road No. 2 will be developed as an expressway with a designed speed of 100 kilometers per hour.

The road will connect with road No. 1, then run parallel to the Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway project, and end at the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway.

To make room for the two roads, the People’s Committee of Long Thanh District in Dong Nai Province has taken back more than 130 hectares of land, including some 110 hectares from 900 households.

Dong Nai has handed over 70 percent of the cleared site for road No. 1, while the site for road No. 2 has yet to be handed over, news site VnExpress reported.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, ACV chairman Lai Xuan Thanh said the corporation would mobilize resources and coordinate with the contractor to complete the project as scheduled and meet quality requirements set by the lawmaking National Assembly and the government.

The Long Thanh International Airport project, located some 40 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, will have an annual capacity of 100 million passengers and five million metric tons of cargo.

Work on the project will be carried out in three phases.

In the first phase, the airport is designed to accommodate 25 million passengers and handle 1.2 million metric tons of cargo per year.

The project, which needs an estimated investment of some VND336.63 trillion ($14.1 billion), will be the largest airport in the nation once it is complete.

The construction of the passenger terminal of the airport will begin in August.
